Springing forward • Easter wishes

With Holy week nearly at a close and the glory of Easter Day coming, it's been a time of reflection and rebirth. This is reflected in nature and the wake up from winter into the spring.

Most of my time when I'm not busy on shoots or photographing events, on those quiet (probably should be admin) days, you will find me perusing in the garden or in the countryside. Spring is my favourite season for the rebirth of our world around us.

The winter months have been pretty traumatic for plants and flowers & the spring is their time to shine. From the hardest, muddiest earth, grows the most delicate, pretty blooms of flowers such as snowdrops, daffoils, primroses, tulips ... to name just a few. These have been reborn and it's the beginning of a fresh start for them.

I adore the flowers faces blowing in a light breeze, tormenting me to take photos of them and how can I not. The wild violets in the grass being asked to be picked and delicately cherished, the sycopation of dancing narcissus and the blue bursting grape hyasenth. But capturing them isn't always as easy as you think.

The slightest breeze will move your carefully thought out composition of the shot, a simple leaf moving can alter the whole focus. There are many shots I've taken of a flower or bloom which seem so innocently simple, but you'd be surprised the trouble that's been taken to achieve that simplicity.

If you're taking a walk over this long weekend, get into nature - really 'into' it. Get down on your hands and knees & move about to see the perspectives, look at the life and colours around your subject, see where the sources of light are coming from ... so many things to think about all for one clear simple shot.

As I type this, I'm sitting in the garden with the sun shining, though it's a little chilly to be honest, but the whole garden is bursting with colour and life. The tulips are dancing around to the sound of the bird song, together with the remaining dafs who look like they're imagining to be that song from the blackbird. Everything inside me itches to get my camera out and shoot away.

Why don't you have a go yourself over this weekend. Pick a flower or plant, take your time, take a few shots and see what beauty you can capture. Maybe upload your results to my facebook page? Happy Easter to you all.
